Points of view
|
| It would be great to have your view on the Future of Training Volunteer Managers. The groundwork for this article has been written by AVM members. We hope this forms the basis of a discussion between volunteer managers and Government on how to help shape the future of training for volunteer managers (in particular in England).
If you'd like to edit or add to this article - just hit the edit button at the top - but please leave your name in the discussion page if you're not logged in. Doing so helps the discussion. It'd also be great if you could add comments about any major changes/additions/edits you make in the discussion page.
Your shout
|
| People are continually asking for the views of volunteers and those who work in volunteer management. It can though, be tricky to keep track of all of them and know how you can participate most effectively.
We bring together here current consultations and surveys on volunteering. We let you know which are open and which are closed (and published the results).

In the news

| New guidelines on volunteer management
The UK Workforce Hub has published a new set of standards for the management of volunteers. More here on the standards.
Volunteering in Criminal Justice System consultation
Baroness Neuberger, the Government's independent volunteering champion, is asking third sector and statutory organisations for their views on volunteering in the criminal justice system.
DOH Volunteering Consultation
The Department of Health has published for consultation its volunteering strategy in health and social care. The consultation closes on 30 September. AVM will be responding to the consultation in due course. We've extracted the section relevant to volunteer management here in our article on volunteering and health and social care.
New guidance on CRB checks
We're currently working on a revised version of the article on CRB checks. We really welcome and encourage edits and input on this - or any discussion points can be added to the article's discussion page of CRB checks on the wiki.
Morgan Inquiry on young adult volunteering published
The Morgan Inquiry has just published its report which looks at "the real reasons for more young people to volunteer, the barriers that prevent young people from doing so - and produced a series of practical recommendations for change".
Volunteer drivers
Susan Ellis' Energize! article on how volunteer managers might adapt to rising fuel prices stimulated debate on UKVPMs. We've tried to incorporate some of the points made in our article on volunteer expenses.
Bob Russell (Shadow Minister, Defence; Colchester, Liberal Democrat) raised mileage expenses in Parliament (28-04-2008)
"To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will increase the level of mileage for which tax-free expenses may be paid to volunteer drivers of voluntary and charitable organisations."
Angela Eagle (Parliamentary Secretary, HM Treasury; Wallasey, Labour) responded:
"I refer the hon. Gentleman to the answer given to the hon. Member for Stroud (Mr. Drew) on 12 November 2007, Official Report, column 22W. HMRC allows volunteers to use the approved mileage allowance payment (AMAP) rate for convenience, but it is not mandatory and volunteer drivers can claim tax relief for the full cost of motoring by completing a return, if they wish to do so."

Volunteer Manager's Handbook
Volunteers help with a face painting activity PHOTO: RSPB
The idea of this wiki is to create a handbook for anyone who supports volunteers in their project or organisation. The focus is on issues from a UK perspective. It would be great to be able to pull together information from across many different areas in volunteer management and generate greater collaboration between volunteer managers.
There is today a vibrant discussion that takes across the sector in many different places. It's hoped that this wiki can help collate this knowledge and let the thriving discussion continue a pace.
The information in this wiki is in the public domain.
What will the writing be used for?
We hope this information will be useful for anyone who works supporting volunteers. As these articles mature and develop, we hope they will:
- Help influence and inform anyone interested in volunteer management across the UK
- Be periodically quality reviewed and published as a special new resource for volunteer managers
- Build and boost content on Wikipedia on the topic of volunteer management
See here for more information on why we're setting up this wiki

Suggested articles- You can suggest an article or put your name down for one
Article stubs - Another way to get involved is to leap in and tackle an article stub (in other words, one which has been started but needs a lot of love and attention to get right)
Recent changes - You can also check what recent changes have been made across the wiki by clicking on 'recent changes' in the lefthand box.
List all articles - Alternatively you can also get a sense of how the wiki is developing by looking at all the articles on the wiki here.
